Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Federal Work Study student to provide administrative support for the NeuroNET center and for laboratory assistant work within Dr. Keerthi Krishnan’s laboratory.  This position offers excellent experience in academic administration, event coordination, and laboratory management within a neuroscience research environment.

Key Responsibilities

NeuroNET Center Administration (40% of time)

NeuroNET Seminar Series administration:

  • Send weekly email reminders for NeuroNET seminars to faculty, students, and staff
  • Coordinate with Mossman TV and UT calendar systems to ensure proper scheduling and announcements
  • Help communicate with seminar hosts to confirm itinerary setup and logistics
  • Help coordinate lunch orders for trainees attending speaker presentations with Ms. Kimberly Sunday, CAS event planning and support personnel.
  • Back-up support for seminar logistics including room setup, refreshments, and A/V equipment coordination

Seasonal administrative responsibilities:

·         Distribute travel award reminders and track application deadlines, three times per year.

·         Annual NeuroNET Retreat Organization (once a year)

  1. ·         Help design and distribute promotional flyers and announcements with CAS Communication department (with guidance and training
  2. Help organize poster session judging, including recruitment and coordination of judges (with guidance and training)
  3. Support prize distribution and recognition activities (with guidance and training).

Laboratory Support (60% of the time) (Training will be provided by the Krishnan lab)

  • Order laboratory supplies and maintain inventory tracking systems
  • Assist with mouse husbandry tasks under supervision
    • Extensive training and guidance will be provided.
    • Excellent opportunity to learn valuable skills working with laboratory animals, gel electrophoresis for genotyping and maintaining a meticulous laboratory notebook.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • The ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously, once training has been provided and completed satisfactorily.
  • Professional demeanor and discretion when handling sensitive information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in neuroscience or biological sciences and/or business management

Work Environment

  • Combination of office and laboratory settings
  • Interaction with faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students and visiting speakers

Time Commitment

  • Attending the initial parts of lab meetings on Wednesdays from 9- 9:20am is required. It is optional to stay longer to learn research updates from lab members. Typical lab meeting times are 9-11am on Wednesdays throughout the year.
  • 15-20 hours per week throughout the year
  • Flexible scheduling around class commitments

  • The possibility of learning and contributing to research projects during the academic breaks and Summer in the Krishnan laboratory.

The Krishnan lab works on understanding neural plasticity mechanisms in mouse models of neurological disorders. We use molecular, cellular, behavioral and computational approaches.

Students who excel in given tasks will have the opportunity to learn and engage in different procedures and techniques in Neurobiology over subsequent semesters in the lab. These skills would be useful in preparation for graduate school, medical school and/or lab technician jobs. No previous wet lab experience necessary. 

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications Specific to the Position:

Must be an undergraduate student and be enrolled with good academic standing at the University of Tennessee

Must possess good time management skills, organization skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

Goals and deliverables assigned at the beginning of the semester and assessed every two weeks.

Weekly 1:1 meetings to discuss progress/issues/concerns with Dr. Krishnan
