Get ready to dive into the exciting world of theatre craftsmanship! We are seeking an enthusiastic student to join our Scene Shop Work-Study Team. You'll team up with our skilled carpenters and technical staff to bring captivating stage sets to life. This hands-on role is at the heart of our productions, turning a director's creative vision into a tangible, awe-inspiring reality.

This season at the Clarence Brown Theatre is full of amazing projects, including the return of our large-scale Christmas show. You'll have the opportunity to gain valuable experience with automation and special effects, making this a truly unique learning experience.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Scenic Construction:

    • Assist in building and fabricating scenic elements using materials like wood and steel.

    • Operate power tools and equipment safely, following all safety protocols.

    • Interpret shop drawings and blueprints to construct assigned projects.

  • Shop Maintenance and Organization:

    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the scene shop.

    • Organize and maintain shop space, including tools and equipment.

    • Help with maintenance and repair of shop facilities, tools, and equipment.

  • Production Support:

    • Transport, assemble, and strike stage scenery for productions.

    • Participate in the load-in and strike of productions, as assigned.

    • Assist with other production-related tasks as assigned by the Assistant Technical Director.

  • Safety and Collaboration:

    • Follow and enforce all safety protocols in the theatre scene shop.

    • Collaborate with Clarence Brown staff, graduate students, and fellow workers.

Job Requirements
  • Enthusiasm to Learn: A strong eagerness to learn and engage with the craft of theatrical set construction is essential.

  • Physical Engagement: The role is physically active and requires the ability to construct, move, and handle various materials and tools.

  • Team Player: Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team, taking direction and contributing to a shared goal.

  • Time Commitment: We're looking for students who can commit to larger, consistent blocks of time during our shop hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. We understand that class schedules are a priority, so we are flexible and will work with you to create a schedule that fits your academic needs while allowing you to fully engage in our projects.

Evaluation Procedure

At the end of each semester, our Assistant Technical Director will meet with you about your journey and contributions.
