Job Description

The Sheldon Lab is looking for new team members to join our group! We generally enjoy natural history and all things ecology/evolution and conservation. We are looking for individuals who love animals, including beetles!

Purpose/ Role of the position within the organization:  The vision of the College of Arts and Sciences is, “to produce graduates who are innovative citizen leaders and to pursue pathbreaking research and creative expression that enriches lives and seeks solutions to society’s problems.” The individual(s) in the student research assistant position will directly contribute to the success and productivity of ongoing lab research. Research in the lab is cutting edge with high intellectual merit and broad societal impact, as demonstrated by the numerous prestigious grants and fellowships obtained by the lab’s students, postdocs, and PI. By aiding research efforts, the work study student will gain transferable skills including organization and analysis of large data sets, the ability to interpret and carry standard operating procedures (SOPs), and experience contributing as both a team member and leader. Through these activities, we aim to increase the independence and confidence of the work study student to produce “innovative citizen leaders.”

Duties and responsibilities: Our lab focuses on the ecological and physiological responses of organisms to temperature change. We work with a number of different organisms, such as insects and salamanders, however, much of our experimental work is with dung beetles. The student must show up on time during scheduled work hours and communicate with the PI and lab manager if duties cannot be covered due to unforeseeable events. The student must also maintain open lines of communication with other contributing students or postdocs in the lab about project progress, animal health, and supplies availability. General responsibilities are below.

Team Member Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a regular schedule and be on time
  • Animal husbandry; feed and care for animals and communicate any concerns
  • Clean and restock supplies
  • Occasionally autoclave soil and dung
  • Data collection and entry
  • Must be flexible and understand that your job duties may change from time to time and that you may be asked to help in other areas.

Job Requirements

General and specific qualifications: The student must be enrolled full time and in good academic standing with their School/Department. The student must be able to handle insects and work in occasionally dirty conditions (when working with soil and/or cow dung). Some experience entering and organizing data in Excel or a similar spreadsheet software is required. Preferred qualifications include the ability to lift approximately 20-30 pounds; the lab often works with large quantities of soil and dung that must be autoclaved or moved across bins. If the student will be working in the field, the student must be able to work in hot conditions and possess moderate hiking capabilities. All training will be provided.

Evaluation Procedure

Evaluation Procedures: Each student will begin working as a trainee. During this time, the student will work directly with the lab maanger, a graduate stduent, or postdoctoral researcher in the lab. Training will include animal husbandry, sterilization techniques, general lab maintenance, and data management. During this training period (~15 work study hours), the student will receive immediate onsite feedback. Following the training period, the student will receive feedback in accordance with the specific research project timeline, but no less than once monthly. Feedback will be delivered during an in-person meeting. The student will be evaluated on timeliness, success in carrying out SOPs, capacity for independence, attention to detail and carefulness as it pertains to data collection, cleanliness in the lab, and their facilitation of animal welfare.
