Job Description

The Office of Engineering Communications promotes the activity, news, and programs of the college and its departments to a variety of internal and external audiences through many different print and digital pieces and platforms.

Engineering Communications is seeking a student worker to work remotely to assist with reseraching, writing, and editing content for communications vehicles such as e-newletters, websites, video scripts, magazines, brochures, and other collateral. Based on the abilities and skills of the chosen candidate, the job will entail some or all of the tasks and responsibilities listed below.

Job Requirements

Job Duties may include some or all of the following. Tasks will be assigned based on the student's interest and skill set as well as the needs of the office:

Write web content including new stories, calendar items, profiles, feature stories, program information, and other items as assigned

Research, conduct interviews, write, and edit a variety of stories for departmental alumni magazines

Provide proofreading and editing support to communications staff

Maintain thorough files and project records and track client communications so as to find important information and project histories

Perform other editorial assignments and projects as assigned

Update distribution mailing lists

Transcribe interviews

Create caption files for videos

Other office/administrative duties as assigned (remote assignments only)

The ideal candidate must have the following skills and abilities:
Ability to stay organized and focused on a task
Ability to show up to work on time
Positive attitude and interest to learn
Willingness to work both as part of a team and individually to accomplish tasks
Ability to contribute creative ideas to projects
Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word
Ability to compose professional emails and conduct oneself in a professional manner
Basic proof reading skills
Familiarity with using Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and/or other social media platforms (TikTok, Snapchat)
Understanding of basic social media best practices

Skills that are desired but not required include:
Familiarity with WordPress and managing website content
Comfortable using Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Photoshop, Bridge, and Premiere Pro
Graphic design experience
Writing experience (articles, feature writing, short-form marketing messaging)

 

 

Evaluation Procedure

The student will be provided proper instruction before starting each task and is encouraged to ask questions before, during, and after an assignment to ensure they understand expectations. Upon completing each task, the student's work will be reviewed and feedback will be provided by the appropriate team member. At the end of each semester worked, the student will receive an overall performance review.
