Compost Data Assistant Looking for individuals who want to make a real-world impact in sustainability! The UT Office of Sustainability operates one of the largest on-campus composting operations in the country with the UT Compost Facility. Composting diverts plant, agricultural, and food waste away from the landfill, and is a vital component of sustainability at the University of Tennessee. The Compost Data Assistant will be responsible for keeping the Compost Facility current with industry testing procedures and exploring new avenues for research or education opportunities, with the main goal of pushing the Compost Facility to be more involved with education and research on campus. To accomplish this mission, this position will be expected to create and maintain relationships with professors and researchers in fields related to soil science and agriculture. The Compost Data Assistant will also be responsible for maintaining procedures for testing various compost parameters while also keeping diligent records of all data collected. Testing parameters include C/N (Carbon/ Nitrogen) ratios, temperatures, moisture content, ammonia levels, salinity, pH, and overall quality of finished product. The Compost Data Assistant will need to adhere to procedure compliance following established policies for state, local, and OMRI recommended best practices, including the Process to Further Reduce Pathogens. This position will also be required to research new and improved practices for testing compost, staying current with industry standards. Experience in an outdoor industrial/construction environment is preferred, but not required. We will train you! Schedule: Flexible, but needs to occur during regular work day hours. 10-20 hours per week for the entirety of the academic school year including the summer sessions, if available. These hours can be anytime Monday-Friday between 7am-6pm, but our department will occasionally work special events late at night or weekends (e.g., during UT football games) |
