Job Description

The UT Compost Facility conducts research in order to better understand how compost interacts with plants as a growing medium as well as develop better methods for compost application. Through understanding and developing these better methods for composting, we will be able to share these findings as well as better our ability to improve soil conditions on and around campus and beyond.

This position exists to manage research and build infrastructure for the different aspects of the compost research program at the UT Compost Facility. The ideal candidate is an organized, resourceful, enthusiastic self-starter with soils or related education and experience.

Job Requirements

Duties include:

  • Build and maintain infrastructure for the compost research program to include growing and testing spaces.

  • Drive trucks to pick up compost and testing soils from UT Compost Facility

  • Study compost leachate for beneficial uses

  • Study what effect leachate is having on nearby water resources

  • Plant specific varieties of plants in each growing experiment and monitor results.

  • Collaborates with soil or other science labs on campus to analyze results and obtain sample measurements.

  • Monitors the compost research program

  • Organizing events and outreach as they see fit, with the guidance of the Office of Sustainability team

  • Coordinating with supervisor(s) to order needed materials

  • Helping recruit and manage volunteers

  • Assisting with special event coordination (volunteer work days, workshops, festivals, etc.)

  • Tabling at campus events

Schedule:  Flexible. Student can create their own schedule (as approved by supervisor) to follow on a semester-by-semester basis. Student should be able to commit between 10- 20 hours/ week during Fall and Spring Terms, and up to 29.5 hours/ week during the summer. Student may be required at times to participate in office-wide events and programming, including helping out with recycling initiatives like Zero Waste Game Days (as determined by home game football schedule).

Job Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate must be able to organize their time effectively, work independently, and problem-solve 

  • Candidate must be able to communicate effectively with their supervisor(s), campus partners, and Grow Lab team members including, but not limited to, asking for help when needed, communicating problems or changes, celebrating successes, collaborating for growth and outreach, etc.

  • Available to work approximately 10-20 hours/week during the Spring and Fall terms up to 29.5 hours/week during the summer

Evaluation Procedure

We maintain open communication and provide one or two evaluation periods per semester. We also have weekly team meetings.
