Duties include: weeding, watering, mulching, transplanting; leaf-blowing, weed-trimming and other duties that may be assigned within the scope of gardens and research greenhouse operations. Students applying for this position will have the extra responsibiliy of being assigned special projects and advanced training in the use of power equipment. Students will consult with Gardens horticulture staff to receive training and direction though students should be self-initiating under minimal supervision. Training and experience with mowers, trimmers, heavy machinery and various hand tools will be provided. Special projects will be assigned based on student interest and garden needs. Recognized in 2013 as the official botanical gardens of the state of Tennessee, the University of Tennessee Gardens are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens showcase and evaluate thousands of annuals, perennials, herbs, tropical plants, trees, shrubs, vegetables and ornamental grasses each year. The gardens are open during all seasons and are free to the public. Work Study Student Gardeners will assist the UT Gardens greenhouse and garden staff in maintaining the UT Gardens.
