Job Description

Duties include: weeding, watering, mulching, transplanting; leaf-blowing, weed-trimming and other duties that may be assigned within the scope of gardens and research greenhouse operations. Students applying for this position will have the extra responsibiliy of being assigned special projects, advanced training in the use of power equipment and the opportunity to manage and direct volunteer groups.  Students will consult with Gardens horticulture staff to receive training and direction though students should be self-initiating under minimal supervision. Training and experience with mowers, trimmers, heavy machinery and various hand tools will be provided. Special projects will be assigned based on student interest and garden needs. 

Job Requirements

Students must maintain a regular schedule. Some weekend work may be required. Generally, student availability should be in a minimum of two-hour time blocks, between the hours of 8 am-5 pm Monday through Friday. The ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and to work outdoors in heat, humidity, rain, cold and dust is required. The ability to work in teams and independently is required. Good communication skills are required.  Applicants applying for this position must have a minimum of 12 months experience working in horticulture or a closely related field.

Evaluation Procedure


Students are evaluated on job performance and output with suggestions for improvement in verbal communication, as needed. Disciplinary measures for tardiness or gross negligence are by verbal and written communication, as needed
