Job Description

 

The Derryberry lab is looking for new Team Members to join our Avian Husbandry Team. We seek animal-loving individuals who will dedicate themselves to the care of our birds. This job description may not be inclusive of all assigned duties, responsibilities, or aspects of the job described.

Avian Husbandry Team Member Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a regular schedule and come to work on time
  • Feed and care for animals
  • Maintain and clean animal enclosures and ensure a safe and secure habitat
  • Observe animals' behavior to ensure timely and prompt care should problems arise
  • Oversee the health of animals within the facility and monitor their eating and sleeping habits
  • Handle while considering the best practices in interacting with each animal
  • Provide enrichment
  • Conduct inventory checks
  • Must be flexible and understand that your job duties may change from time to time and that you may be asked to help in other areas.
Job Requirements

 

Avian Husbandry Team Member Requirements:

  • Experience caring for animals
  • Willingness to complete UTK IACUC training requirements
  • Willingness to learn and master husbandry procedures
  • An optimistic, positive and cheerful outlook is necessary
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds and stand for long periods of time
  • Willing to work weekends and holidays as needed
Evaluation Procedure

Each student will begin working as a trainee. During this time, the student will work directly with a graduate or postdoctoral researcher in the lab. Training will include animal husbandry, sterilization techniques, general lab maintenance, and data management. During this training period, the student will receive immediate onsite feedback. Following the training period, the student will receive feedback in accordance with the specific research project timeline, but no less than once monthly. Feedback will be delivered during an in-person meeting. The student will be evaluated on timeliness, success in carrying out SOPs, capacity for independence, attention to detail and carefulness as it pertains to data collection, cleanliness in the lab, and their facilitation of animal welfare.
