Job Description

The UT Grow Lab is a space where students, faculty, staff, and Knoxvillians participate in hands-on learning, engage in meaningful service, conduct research, and cultivate community. The Grow Lab demonstrates ecological food production methods, addresses local food insecurity, contributes to a sense of place, and encourages interdisciplinary partnerships. 

We are looking for an engaging, passionate, and knowledgeable student to support the work done at the Grow Lab, from planting and harvesting to event planning and outreach. The ideal candidate is an organized, resourceful, enthusiastic self-starter with gardening and/or farming experience. 

Duties include:

  • Working in the garden to produce food for donation

  • Maintaining aesthetic standards (weeding, planting, etc.), walkways, tool shed, and garden surround

  • Coordinating with the Grow Lab Coordinator to order seeds, plants, tools

  • Maintaining planting/harvesting schedule

  • Coordinating with designers of research and class plots

  • Collecting qualitative data on vegetable trial crops

  • Making produce donation deliveries

  • Helping recruit and manage volunteers

  • Assisting with special event coordination (volunteer work days, workshops, festivals, etc.)

  • Tabling at campus events

  • Assisting with the management of the Grow Lab Instagram account

  • Assisting with educational events/workshops through research, preparing presentations, and facilitating tours of the Grow Lab/Pollinator Slope/Postage Stamp Orchards

Job Requirements
  • Experience with sustainable agriculture, permaculture, horticulture, or gardening

  • Able to lift 40+ lbs, perform manual labor, and work outside in all weather

  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude

  • Strong attention to detail and able to keep precise records

  • Able to work independently, take initiative, and solve problems

  • Available to work approximately 20 hours/week during the Spring and Fall terms up to 30 hours/week during the summer (during business hours 8-6)

  • MUST be available to work THROUGH the Summer 2024 term, preferably through Spring 2025

Evaluation Procedure

We maintain open communication and encourage regular feedback between the Work Study staff and their supervisors.
