Job Description

The UT Grow Lab is a space where students, faculty, staff, and Knoxvillians participate in hands-on learning, engage in meaningful service, conduct research, and cultivate community.   The Garden Research Assistant is a hands-on position and plays a vital role in the day to day upkeep of approximately 20 raised beds. This position also exists to conduct research for different aspects of the UT Grow Lab on subjects such as native plants, vegetable plant disease, and best management practices. The ideal candidate is an organized, resourceful, enthusiastic self-starter with gardening experience.

 

  • Build and maintain infrastructure for the compost research program to include growing and testing spaces.

  • Drive trucks to pick up compost and testing soils from UT Compost Facility

  • Plant specific varieties of plants in each growing experiment and monitor results.

  • Collaborates with soil science labs on campus to analyze results and obtain soil sample measurements.

  • Monitors the compost research program

  • Maintaining garden beds at the Grow Lab as needed in collaboration with the Grow Lab Manager, Grow Lab Coordinator, and other garden assistants

  • Coordinating with supervisor(s) to order seeds, plants, tools

  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements
  • The ideal candidate must be able to organize their time effectively, work independently, and problem-solve 

  • Candidate must be able to communicate effectively with their supervisor(s), campus partners, and Grow Lab team members including, but not limited to, asking for help when needed, communicating problems or changes, celebrating successes, collaborating for growth and outreach, etc.

  • Candidate should have a good working knowledge of native and invasive plant species of the area and how to encourage a healthy ecosystem in the garden

  • They must be able to complete physically demanding tasks, like uprooting shrubs and saplings, working for extended periods of time in all weather conditions, lifting up to 40+ lbs, etc

  • Available to work approximately 10-20 hours/week during the Spring and Fall terms up to 29.5 hours/week during the summer

  • MUST be available to work THROUGH through Fall 2024  (position available ASAP) and preferably through the Spring 2025

Evaluation Procedure

We maintain open communication and encourage regular feedback between the Work Study staff and their supervisors.
