Job Description

The Publishing Assistant will provide support to various departments within a small publishing company. This is an excellent opportunity for students of any major (e.g. English, Art, Communications) to gain hands-on experience in the publishing industry. The ideal candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills, an eye for detail, and an interest in books, publishing, or the creative arts. Familiarity with design software, social media platforms, and basic office tools is preferred but not required.

Hours: Coverage is needed during normal business hours

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with editorial tasks such as proofreading, fact-checking, and light copyediting
  • Helping with cover design, layout, and interior book production 
  • Supporting marketing efforts through social media, email campaigns, and event planning
  • Conducting market research and compiling data to inform publishing decisions
  • Providing administrative support such as filing, organizing, and data entry
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and proofreading abilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Interest or background in English, communications, graphic design, or marketing
  • Experience with design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud)
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and online marketing tools
  • Coursework or experience in research methods and data analysis
  • Demonstrated passion for books, the publishing industry, or the creative arts
Evaluation Procedure

Student employees at UT Press are supervised by a team that includes the director and a member of the staff in the interest area of the student worker (e.g., art, editorial).  Students will be trained during their first week by the relevant staff member, and the staff member and director will provide feedback as needed to establish and maintain performance.
