Job Description

Purpose or Role of the Position Within the Organization: 

Studio Student Library Assistants and Work Study students are the primary public service staff in The Studio. We’re located in the South Commons of Hodges Library. The Studio SLA’s and WS assist patrons with media production, hardware and software provided to users through the tech fee.  They are expected to have a working knowledge of media software used in The Studio and the video, audio, and photography equipment used in our spaces. In addition, assistants may have the opportunity to work on special projects such as the digital conversion of library media collections or helping with a video contest.

Schedule: Appointments vary based on semester staffing needs and student schedules. Generally, students work 10-15 hours per week regularly during a semester. Must be willing to work some, not all, openings, closing and weekends.


Operating Hours: 8:00 am – 10 PM Monday-Thursday; 8:00 am – 6pm Friday; 12pm – 10 PM Sunday, (Summer and holiday hours vary).

Responsibilities Associated with the Position: 

  • Working at The Studio help desk:
    • Logging users in and out of workstations
    • Setting up video, audio, and VR equipment in studio spaces
    • Providing assistance with hardware and software
    • Checking in and out in-house equipment such as microphones
    • Assisting users in making reservations for The Studio
    • Explaining Large Format Printing Procedure to users
    • Participating in training offered by The Studio
    • Opening and closing The Studio
    • Collecting Stats
    • Troubleshooting patron inquiries

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications Specific to the Position: 

  • Significant experience with computer applications for media production (such as Adobe Creative Suite, GarageBand and PowerPoint) on Macintosh computers
  • Experience using audio, video, and photography equipment
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills in individual and group settings
  • Customer service experience with a commitment to provide high quality service
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Evaluation Procedure

Evaluation Procedure: Student employees in the Studio are supervised by a team including, Shelly O’Barr, Studio Manager; Paris Whalon, Student Success Librarian for Media Literacy; Trey Hobson, Studio IT, Jared Sebby, Evening Supervisor, and Michelle Brannen, Studio Head, Scholars’ Collaborative. Students will be trained during their first two weeks on the job with continuous feedback from supervisors and peer employees. Studio staff regularly observe student work and provide feedback as needed to improve performance.
