The Nutrition Physiology Lab at the ANSC department is seeking undergraduate students with interested in care and research experience in dairy cattle. Project schedule: January 20 - May 10, 2025 Students selected will be trained to work with dairy cattle, sample collection and processing, analysis, and data analytics among other activities. Students will collect and keep records, enter data, collect sample materials, maintain a well-organized environment, and attend animal care training sessions. The research project is conducted at UT ETREC-Little River Dairy and JRTU. The research project enrolls 32 lactating dairy cows and its objective is to determine the effect of heat stress on milk sytnehsis and health in dairy cows. This study offers a ton of hands-on experiences in dairy cattle. It also has a laboratory component (e.g., dry matter determination, rectal temperature, etc). To perform the animal part, you need to dedicate > 14 hours per week. You will be trained to perform the activities according to the research standards for this project. Some of the activities include mixing and preparing the rations for the cows in the project, ingredients and diets sample collection, milk collection, blood collection, body weigh measurements, laboratory procedures, data collection, etc. The UT dairy farm is located about 35 minutes off campus, and you are encouraged to carpool with other students participating in this project. A total of 20 students are participating in the project and divided into shifts of 3 students per shift Monday through Sunday.
