Student Library Assistants and Work Study students will be assigned to public support roles in The Studio and Medbery Makerspace located in Hodges Library. The SLA’s and WS assist patrons with media production, hardware and software, as well as assisting with all maker tools in the makerspace such as 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and sewing machines provided to users through the tech fee. They are expected to have a working knowledge of media software used in The Studio and the video, audio, and photography equipment used in our spaces. SLA’s and WS need to have a basic understanding of maker tools and equipment to help patrons troubleshoot, plan, and create. In addition, assistants may have the opportunity to work on special projects such as the digital conversion of library media collections, helping with a video contest, leading certification workshops, learning how to use new tools and equipment, and many other tasks. Schedule: Appointments vary based on semester staffing needs and student schedules. Generally, students work 10-15 hours per week regularly during a semester. Must be willing to work some, not all, openings, closing and weekends. Operating Hours: 8:00 am – 10pm Monday-Thursday; 8:00 am – 6pm Friday; 12pm –10pm Sunday, (Summer and holiday hours vary). Responsibilities Associated with the Position: • Working at The Studio or Makerspace help desk: - Logging users in and out of workstations
- Setting up video, audio, and VR equipment in studio spaces
- Aiding with hardware and software
- Checking in and out in-house equipment such as microphones, soldering irons, etc.
- Assisting users in making reservations for The Studio
- Explaining Large Format Printing Procedure to users
- Participating in training offered by The Studio & Medbery Makerspace
- Opening and closing The Studio or Medbery Makerspace
- Collecting Stats
- Troubleshooting patron inquiries
