Position Summary: The Bettaieb Laboratory within the Department of Nutrition at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Federal Work-Study student to contribute to our ongoing biomedical research. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a stimulating research environment, working alongside our graduate and undergraduate students. The successful candidate will assist with various laboratory tasks, including animal work, cell culture, biochemical analyses, and general lab upkeep. This role is an excellent fit for students interested in exploring careers in nutrition, biomedical sciences, or related fields. Responsibilities: 1. Animal Handling: Assist with the care and handling of laboratory animals relevant to our research. This may involve routine care, sample collection, and assisting with experimental procedures under supervision. 2. Cell Culture: Participate in the maintenance and experimentation with mammalian cell cultures, adhering to sterile techniques. This includes passaging cells and performing basic cell-based assays. 3. Biochemical Experiments: · Perform protein extraction and quantification from biological samples. · Conduct Western blotting experiments, including gel electrophoresis and antibody-based detection. · Perform DNA extraction and basic molecular biology techniques. 4. Reagent and Solution Preparation: Prepare necessary laboratory reagents, buffers, and solutions following established protocols. 5. Laboratory Maintenance: · Ensure adequate supply of lab consumables, including filling tip boxes. · Assist with the basic maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment. · Aid in the proper disposal of laboratory waste. · Maintain organized and accurate lab notes. · General Laboratory Support: Provide general assistance to the research team as needed. · Adhere to all laboratory safety guidelines and standard operating procedures. |
