Job Description

Overview   

Community Health Student Assistants will work with the Student Health Center’s Community Health Team.  This position will assist with processing Health and Illness Support Form submissions and other Community Health initiatives.  Students with appropriate training and education may be assigned additional clinical or administrative duties supporting the Student Health Center.

Duties    

  • Review Health and Illness Support Forms to determine situationally appropriate guidance and support.  
  • Monitor, respond to, and document communications from students and adjust guidance when appropriate.  
  • Escalate difficult or troublesome reports and any issues to Community Health and Resilience coordinating staff.  
  • Ensure that all patient and student information is kept confidential in accordance with relevant federal statutes and Student Health Center protocols 
  • Other duties supporting community health team activities as necessary    
Job Requirements

Applicants should be UTK students in good standing with a demonstrated interest in public health or healthcare. Ideal applicants will be enrolled or have a background in public health, social work, or other healthcare or social service-related fields and able to remain in the position for at least a year.  

Applicants should be eligible for and committed to at least 5 hours of work per week. Applicants with more availability may be given preference. 

Community Health Student Assistants should be committed to the advancement of community health, the protection of privacy, and the application of evidence-based health and wellness practices. Applicants should have strong written and oral communications skills and be able to communicate in a professional, empathetic, and culturally humble manner. Applicants should have a history of high-level dependability and accountability, attention to detail, and well-developed critical thinking skills. A willingness to ask for help is required to be successful in this role.  

FERPA, HIPPA, and other health-related safety training upon hire. HISF procedures training completion within two weeks of hire. Any student employees who have contact with patients may have additional infection control-related requirements. 

Evaluation Procedure

Student employees will be evaluated based on reliability and adherence to departmental policies and procedures. All student employees will complete a once-monthly meeting with a Community Health coordinating staff member to discuss both performance and experience with the program.
