Job Description

The UT School of Natural Resources is recruiting 1-2 Federal Work Study students as part-time research technicians (10-20 hrs per week). The students will assist with amphibian and reptile care, collecting samples for pathogen testing, evaluations of animal health, and disease diagnostics, such as gDNA extraction, quantitative PCR, histology, and other laboratory-based diagnostic techniques. This work is in collaboration with the UT College of Veterinary Medicine (Zoological Companion Animal Services); thus, students with a pre-veterinary concentration are encouraged to apply.  
Job Requirements

Requirements: Enrolled in a science-based major at University of Tennessee and have a strong interest to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, wildlife disease ecology, or human medicine.  

Preferred qualifications: Previous experience with animal care, humane euthanasia, IACUC and biosafety practices, and microbiological techniques (e.g., pipetting, assays). The student should be able to work independently and outside normal business hours, including weekends.  
Evaluation Procedure

The work study student will interact with a lab manager who will report to the work study supervisor (Matthew Gray) about any issues or problems. The student, lab manager, and supervisor will have open and ongoing communication about performance. The supervisor will conduct a formal performance evaluation at least once per semester.  Retention will be based on dependability and performance. The student will have the opportunity to respond in writing or verbally to performance evaluations.
