Job Description

Student assistants (SAs) play a vital role at the International House, operating the facility and assisting staff, faculty, and students from diverse backgrounds.

They gain hands-on experience in facility operations and event planning, fostering cross-cultural skills and awareness. During the academic year (fall and spring terms), the International House is open Monday through Thursday 8am to 9pm and Friday 8am to 5pm. SAs work 10-15 hours per week for $11.00 per hour, including weekends and evenings as needed, with flexibility required to meet program demands and for all-staff events. They receive compensation for extra hours worked. SAs participate in mandatory staff training and begin working 10-15 days before classes start each semester. SAs are required to assist with International Student Orientation and commit to at least one academic year of service. Additional training and professional development opportunities are also mandatory for SAs.

We are specifically looking for those with avaliablity on Mondays and Wednesdays 11am-4pm, but there will be additional expectations to meet programming demands or for all staff events. 

 

Student Assistant duties include (but are not limited to):

·       Serving as front desk staff and performing administrative duties associated with daily operations including answering phones, responding to emails, making copies, greeting guests, and giving out information about programs or campus offices

·       Assisting professional staff and/or student groups in the planning/implementation of events, which may include making posters, researching on the web, etc.

·       Setting up/taking down events (e.g. setting up and/or arranging tables/chairs and A/V equipment)

·       Maintaining and cleaning certain areas of the facility before and after programs including service area (making coffee/tea, restocking supplies/keeping service area clean)

·       Assisting in the planning and execution of I-House large signature events, such as International Festival and Dance Competition

·       Assisting in the planning and execution of I-House events and programs, such as Coffeehouse, World Showcase, Language Practice, Photo Contest, etc.

·       Contributing to marketing and outreach initiatives to connect the UTK community to I- House programs and events

·       Supporting our international students throughout their transition to the U.S. and Knoxville primarily through orientation (however, this support will continue through things like ACE trips, workshops, and the friendship program)

·       Giving tours of the International House on occasion

·       Driving a UT car or minivan on occasion

·       Attending staff training/meetings

·       Other duties as assigned

 

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

·       Must enjoy engaging with those from other countries/cultures

·       Enrolled student at UT

·       Legally authorized to be employed by UT

·       Able to work with people from various national, cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds

·       Flexibility regarding work hours

·       Good command of spoken and written English

·       Graphic design experience preferred

 

Preferred Qualifications (not required)

·       Experience living, studying, and/or traveling abroad is a plus but not required

·       Knowledge of a language other than English is helpful but not required

·       Valid US driver’s license or Driving Certificate is helpful but not required

Evaluation Procedure

 Written communication will be provided for each task. At the start of each workday, instructions will be shared outlining the required tasks and their deadlines. Verbal feedback will also be given daily to ensure alignment on expectations and progress. We will review tasks together and provide regular updates to keep staff informed.
