The Animal Behavior and Welfare Lab (PI: Dr. Blair Downey) is looking for motivated undergraduates to assist with research on dairy calf behavioral development. We are currently conducting research projects evaluating how common farming practices in early life, such as isolation, feed restriction, and early weaning, affect the emergence and persistence of abnormal behaviors in calves. This project includes both in-person data collection, including animal handling, animal care, and behavioral observations, at the ETREC Little River Dairy (Walland, TN), and video-based behavioral analysis and data entry in Brehm Animal Science (Knoxville, TN). Ideally applicants will be able to participate in research at both locations, but applicants who are only available for on-campus work in Brehm will still be considered. In-person data collection shifts at the dairy are at variable times. Shifts for animal care are daily from 4:30-9:30am and 5-8pm, while observational shifts can occur throughout a 24-h period, with individual shifts of 2-4h at a time. Data coding and analysis at Brehm can occur at flexible times, in accordance with the student's schedule and preferences. Students do not have to be available during all shift dates/times, but should list their availability during a typical week when applying. Through working on this project, students will gain experience in hands-on animal care and data collection, including transporting and weighing calves, and weighing food and water. Students will also learn how to collect and analyze behavioral data using both direct, in-person methods, and video-based coding, and assist with data management practices. Students will also have opportunities to discuss research with Dr. Downey and the Animal Behavior and Welfare lab group broadly, via a journal club, and may have the opportunity to present independent research at an undergraduate research conference (e.g. EUReCA). Ideal applicants should have a strong interest in animal behavior and welfare; strong organizational and time management skills; and be detail-oriented. To participate in data collection at the dairy, students must have a valid driver's license and reliable access to transportation. |
