Organization description The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) at UTK is dedicated to advancing knowledge of the diversity, ecology, and evolution of life. The department fosters an interdisciplinary approach to understanding biological systems, combining fieldwork, laboratory research, and quantitative analysis to address fundamental questions in ecology, evolution, and organismal biology. The Suissa Lab specifically focuses on plant vascular anatomy and evolution, using histological techniques, light microscopy, and digital image analysis to explore how anatomical traits influence plant function, adaptation, and diversity. Purpose of the position within the organization The Suissa Lab at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is seeking a motivated undergraduate student to assist in research exploring the structure and evolution of plant vascular anatomy. Our lab integrates histology, light microscopy, and image analysis to investigate how anatomical traits shape plant function and diversity. This position offers a hands-on opportunity to develop skills in sample preparation, sectioning, staining, and digital imaging of plant tissues. Duties and responsibilities - Prepare plant tissue samples for histology (fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining)
- Operate microscopes and capture high-quality images of vascular anatomy
- Analyze images quantitatively using software (e.g., ImageJ/Fiji)
- Maintain accurate records of samples, images, and measurements
- Participate in lab meetings and contribute to experimental discussions
- Assist with general lab maintenance and organization
