Job Description

The BCMB Department is looking for 3-4 enthusiastic and creative undergraduate students to join our team as Social Media Ambassadors. In this role, you will help bring the exciting science happening in our department to life — sharing research stories, student experiences, and departmental events with the world.

This is a hands-on, creative position where your voice, ideas, and initiative genuinely matter. You will work directly with a faculty coordinator who will provide direction and content guidance, but we are looking for self-starters who can bring fresh ideas about platforms, trends, and storytelling to the department. Your content will represent the BCMB department publicly and may reach researchers, prospective students, and science enthusiasts well beyond UTK.

This role is open to students from any major— we especially encourage students in Communications, Journalism, Art & Design, and Marketing with an interest in science communication to apply alongside BCMB and life science students.

What You'll Gain

This role is more than a part-time job — it's a genuine professional development opportunity. By the end of your time as an ambassador, you will have built real experience in:

  • Science communication — translating complex research for broad, public audiences

  • Content strategy and digital storytelling — understanding what works across different platforms and audiences

  • Professional networking — engaging with faculty, researchers, and prospective students

  • Portfolio-worthy work — publicly visible content that demonstrates your skills to future employers or graduate programs

Science communication and outreach are increasingly valued in research, academia, medicine, industry, and beyond. This role gives you a meaningful head start.

Job Requirements

We are recruiting a small team with complementary strengths— you don't need to check every box, but ideally each ambassador brings something unique to the group.

We are especially interested in students who have:

  1. A passion for science communication and the ability to translate complex topics into accessible, engaging content
  2. An interest in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, or related life sciences?(scientific curiosity counts — you don't need to be a BCMB major!)
  3. A strong design eye and experience with visual content creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Express, CapCut, or similar)
  4. Familiarity with social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Bluesky) and an understanding of what science content resonates on each
  5. Basic photo and/or video editing skills
  6. The initiative to stay current on platform trends and bring new ideas to the team
  7. Strong time management and reliability — consistent content creation requires self-motivation
  8. Comfort on camera for video content such as lab tours, reels, or student spotlights?(a plus, not required!)

Applications are submitted through the UTK Federal Work Study JobAd portal.

Please include:

  1. Resume

  1. Portfolio — examples of content you've created (social media handles, design samples, writing samples, videos, etc.). Informal examples are welcome — a personal account, a class project, or a graphic you made for a club all count!

  1. Short Statement of Interest (1 page or less) — Tell us why you're interested in this role, what strengths you'd bring to the team, and any ideas you already have for BCMB social media content.
